Scarves are incredibly versatile and, depending on the fabric of your scarf, they can either keep you wonderfully warm in the Winter or cool and protected from the sun during the Summer.

 

The way in which you wear your scarf is very important as it can literally transform any outfit or look.

When it comes to wearing your scarf, you can be as imaginative as you want! However, there are a few basic rules that should always be followed. For example, try and keep it simple by only tying knots you are confident with and not wearing it as a necktie (rather keep it slightly loose).

 

When picking your scarf type, be mindful that the length and thickness can dictate how you can wear the scarf.

 

A simple loop is a great scarf style, to begin with, if you have never worn a scarf before. Simply fold your scarf in half and make a loop at one end. Put the scarf around your neck and then pull the loose ends through your loop.

The celebratory knot looks great with most outfits and this is done by draping the scarf around your neck, leaving one end draping back around. You then need to tie the two corners of the scarf together loosely and you have a beautiful celeb look.

 

The preppy look suits plain shirts or tops and all you need to do is drape your scarf around your neck, leaving one end a little longer than the other. The long end should then be looped twice around the neck and you perfect the look by making a loose, off-center half knot with the scarf ends.

 

The infinity loop is a great way to showcase your pretty scarf. This look is achieved by draping your scarf around the neck and then tying the 2 corners together. Create a loop with the knot and then put it around your neck.

The pretzel is a slightly more complicated look but is well worth the effort! Begin by folding your scarf in half and then draping it around your neck. Leave the loop off to one side and then pull one end of the scarf through your loop. The other end should then be placed on top of the loop and then pulled through in the opposite direction.

The cowl shape creates a lovely, soft look that keeps your neck nice and warm during the Winter. All you need to do is place the scarf around your neck and then take one end and loop it around once more. Ensuring that both ends are even, tie them together with a half knot. The result will be 2 beautiful loops around the neck that you can adjust according to the volume you want.

 

For something a little different, why not try the twisted necklace style? This is easily done by draping your scarf around the neck and then tying a secure half knot in the center. Grab one end of the scarf, loop it around the other side, and then knot it together. Repeat the same process with the other side.

 

In SA there is a new appreciation for the delicate balance between ancient symbolism and modern identity. Wearing your scarf around your head is not only a symbol of tradition but also a great look! Simply fold your scarf in half, put it over your head, and secure with a knot at the back of your head. It can be this simple.

For added warmth, wear your large scarf as a kimono. Grab two adjacent corners, tie a knot, and repeat the same process on the other side. You will have a rectangular shape that you can place around your shoulders with your arms going through the spaces that you created.

 

Finally, the cowgirl look is achieved by folding your scarf in half so that you have a triangular shape. Ensure that the long side of the triangle is facing you and then pull two of the corners over and around your neck until your scarf is near your chin. Simply make a loose knot in the front and you have a great, cowgirl look!
